($150) Bright red. Explosive, intensely perfumed bouquet encompasses smoky red and dark berries, cherry, fresh and dried flowers and an intriguing minerality. Deep in concentrated blackberry and raspberry preserve flavors but also boasts superb freshness and clarity. The bright, tangy finish doesn't want to quit, throwing off notes of floral pastille, graphite, tobacco and sweet red and dark berries. The wine's tannins are overwhelmed by sweet fruit.

Starts slowly, but builds quickly. Red cherry turns to black cherry, with iron, white pepper, mineral and olive flavors filling out the background. The finish is long and fine-grained.

The plush, elegant, exotic 2004 Cote Rotie Cote Blonde, which is the only wine that has 3-4% Viognier in the blend, boasts sweet litchi nut, honeysuckle, raspberry, and smoky cherry notes with some tapenade and spice. It is medium-bodied with tangy acidity and a layered mouthfeel.

Superb Cote Rotie, this side of excellent

Rene Rostaing is unarguably one of the most talked-about producers in Cote-Rotie. He started as a fairly small producer, but his wines have grown in quality, reputation, and production. He vinifies his parcels separately and makes his wines in a more traditional fashion. New oak is kept to about 10% to guarantee the elegant style which is so spectacular in the area. Vintages to look for are 2003, 2001, 1999, 1991, 1985, 1978, and 1971.
