($48; 15% alcohol; from a vineyard on the western fringe of Sonoma County, above Occidental) Sussman noted that these vines were harvested on October 4 in 2004 and on November 1 in 2005. Very good bright ruby. Brooding, deep nose offers blackberry, licorice, maple syrup and sweet oak. Wonderfully broad, sweet and rich, with creamy blackberry and blueberry flavors that are fully ripe but not at all cooked. Impressively chewy syrah, finishing with sweet tannins and excellent length. A new syrah bottling to follow.

The 2004 Syrah Cherry Camp (a cooler site in the Freestone Valley) also displays a dense ruby/purple hue as well as more structure, and cooler black fruit flavors mixed with hints of bay leaf, pepper, and spice. Rich, pure, and impressive, but more backward and less evolved than the Timbervine, it should drink well for 7-10 years.

Based on this sample, this new vineyard shows considerable promise. Deeply colored with a very full and already surprisingly complex nose of plum, spice, black pepper, and some game. It smells |thick|. Strong and powerful with mouth coating flavor and velvety tannin. Already delicious to drink.

Cherry cobbler on the nose. Good smooth tannin and acidity. Hints of roasted game. Red licorice. Flashes of mint and salami. Black pepper. Purple-red in the glass. Hints of cocoa. Very good fruit and elegant but slightly underwhelming. Gradually becoming smokier and more blackberry emerging. Day 2 - Still silky tannins with more plum and meaty tones in the forefront.

Radio Coteau works exclusively with small, cool-climate vineyard sites in western Sonoma County. Winegrower Eric Sussman's first vintage at the helm was 2001, after spending the years prior gaining experience with organic winegrowing in Washington and French winemaking in Bordeaux and Burgundy. Learning from the masters at the Chateaux Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1995 and Domaines Comte Armand and Jacques Prieur in 1996, Eric returned stateside with a strong commitment to producing wines with a true "sense of place." The winery crafts Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel, primarily from designated sites.
