($48) Bright ruby-red. Superripe aromas of black raspberry, chocolate, brown spices, loam and underbrush; quite Burgundian in character. Fat, velvety and full, with dense flavors of blackberry and chocolatey oak. This offers terrific depth for North Coast pinot from the 2004 vintage. Finishes very long and smooth, with noble tannins.

A significant step up the quality ladder is the 2004 Pinot Noir Savoy. From the cool Anderson Valley microclimate, it possesses blueberry, black cherry, and meaty forest floor notes, terrific fruit in the aromatics, attack, mid-palate, and finish, and nicely integrated tannin. This cuvee is a blend of the Martini, Pommard, and Dijon 115 clones. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.

Elegant and harmonious, with dusty berry, spice, sage and chicory notes. Good intensity, excellent balance and a finish that returns to its earthy themes. 480 cases made.

  • Burghound | Rating: 89

Initially, this was aromatically quite somber and discreet but with air it becomes subtly complex and beautifully nuanced, mixing earth and dark berry fruit aromas followed by rich, full, sweet and relatively muscular flavors that possess good depth and power though there is noticeable finishing warmth on the mouth coating and impressively long finish.

still young; lots of bright cherry fruit and underlying earthiness, but not yet fully integrated.

Thick with lots of brooding power. From new Remond Troncais plum, coffee, and spice come to the fore while from new Francois Freres inviting high toned aromas of vanilla, rose, and violet are emphasized. Looks to be another very fine and well balanced Savoy Vineyard Pinot.

Radio Coteau works exclusively with small, cool-climate vineyard sites in western Sonoma County. Winegrower Eric Sussman's first vintage at the helm was 2001, after spending the years prior gaining experience with organic winegrowing in Washington and French winemaking in Bordeaux and Burgundy. Learning from the masters at the Chateaux Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1995 and Domaines Comte Armand and Jacques Prieur in 1996, Eric returned stateside with a strong commitment to producing wines with a true "sense of place." The winery crafts Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Zinfandel, primarily from designated sites.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
