  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($72) Full medium ruby. Cassis, minerals, dark chocolate, fruitcake and a floral topnote on the nose. Dense and full but juicy, with highly concentrated, sweet flavors of berries, chocolate and spices. Conveys an impression of strong extract. Finishes with sweet tannins, excellent length and a peppery lift.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

Dense, rich and concentrated, with a chewy core of ripe currant and blackberry fruit that teeters on syrupy. Finishes with chewy tannins and a dash of heat, but this is deep, intense and potent, with a lingering finish.

Plumpjack's 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate was aged in 75% new French oak, underwent malolactic in barrel, and was kept in wood for 20 months prior to bottling. A brilliant effort, it possesses the classic first-growth qualities that the Oakville Corridor seems to always achieve. Notes of cedarwood, creme de cassis, licorice and incense, along with fabulous balance, sweet tannins and a multilayered mouthfeel are found in this full-bodied, gorgeous 2004. Enjoy it now or cellar it for another 15+ years. It is another wine that demonstrates that 2004 is even better than I thought early on.

  • The PlumpJack Winery's Estate Vineyard, founded in 1881, is nestled in the nape of the Vaca Mountain range on the eastern side of the Napa Valley. The main winery building, which is still in use, was completed in 1883. Vineyards have covered the Oakville site since the late 1800s.

In the more recent past, the facility where PlumpJack now makes its wine was the original home of Villa Mt. Eden Winery. Begun in 1973 by proprietors James and Anne McWilliams, the vineyard and winery rapidly gained attention for producing dynamic, long-lived wines, with particular emphasis on the estate and reserve Cabernet Sauvignons. Continuing in that tradition by producing the finest Cabernet Sauvignon is PlumpJack Winery's ultimate goal.
