2004 Peter Michael L'Esprit des Pavots
Wine Advocate | Rating: 92
In order to produce the finest wine possible under the Les Pavots label, Peter Michael has been culling out lots for a second wine. The knock-out 2004 L'Esprit des Pavots (45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot) is more forward than its bigger sibling, displaying plenty of melted fudge, creme de cassis, charcoal, licorice, herbs, and smoky oak. Opulent, fleshy, and soft, it is both a hedonistic and intellectual turn-on. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.Drink Dates: 2006-2018Author: Robert ParkerInternational Wine Cellar | Rating: 92
Very good deep ruby. Dark, sappy aromas of blackberry, cassis, minerals, violet and cedar. Superripe, round and fat; makes the sweetest impression of these four Bordeaux blends today but also comes across as sappy and fresh. Finishes very long, with smooth, building tannins.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: May/June 2006

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
