Ripe, delivering plum, licorice, tar and tobacco flavors intermingled with firm, muscular tannins. This still needs a little time to integrate, but the elements are there. Menthol and mineral notes linger on the finish.

Serralunga d'Alba, 24 months in botti.A little smoky and leathery. Then sweet and quite developed on the palate. Chewy, unexceptional, though the fruit is not bad. (JH)

The estate's 2004 Barolo Vigna Rionda is beautifully perfumed, understated and refined, with silky layers of fruit that emerge gracefully from its mid-weight frame. The tannins possess gorgeous silkiness, which contributes in big way to the wine's sensual, captivating personality. This will be a fascinating wine to follow over the coming years and decades. Roses, spices and flowers of all sorts linger on the impeccable finish.
