  • Burghound | Rating: 92

Beautifully elegant and perfumed high-toned red pinot fruit aromas give way to round, sweet and rich flavors that are delicious, complex and dense with a powerfully long finish of striking length. This is slightly more refined than the Clos de la Roche if not quite as powerful and robust. A seriously good effort here with grace to burn.

Cask sample. Very pure. Powerfully expressive. Quite oaky and very seductive. Quite bright fruit. Slightly dry finish.

Medium red. Reticent nose suggests cherry, raspberry, minerals, spices and earth. Sweet and easygoing in the mouth, with red berry and floral flavors. Noteworthy more for its silky mouth feel than its early complexity. But this builds impressively in breadth and volume on the back half and finishes with very suave tannins and an absence of rough edges.

  • Nicolas Potel founded La Societe Nicolas Potel in 1997 after the sale of Pousse d'Or, which had been run by his father, Gerard Potel, since 1964. Though he has no vineyards of his own, Nicolas has been able to source grapes from some of the most prestigious vineyards in the Cote d'Or and by 2002 had 120 cuvees in production from 50 appellations. His fruit sources meet strict requirements including prime vineyard sites, a minimum of 35-year-old vines, and organic or even bio-dymanic farming. Potel makes wines that are richer and fuller than the more traditional style Burgundy.
