78% Cabernet, 22% Malbec selected from Catena Zapat's best vineyards. 24 months in 100% new French oak.AÿBlack and inky, rich and deliciously savoury. Well built but still subtle, with the ability to dance lightly across the palate.Aÿ (JH)

Catena Zapata's flagship is the Nicolas Catena Zapata, a Cabernet Sauvignon-Malbec blend. The 2004 Nicolas Catena Zapata is composed of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Malbec. It spent 18 months in 100% new French oak. A saturated black purple in color, it has an aristocratic perfume of pain grille, mineral, espresso, saddle leather, cassis, black currant, and black raspberry. Opulently textured, complex, ripe, and sweet on the palate, it maintains a sense of elegance as well as power. It demands 10-15 years of further cellaring and should still be providing pleasure at age 50. It strikes me as being Argentina's equivalent of a great vintage of Lafite-Rothschild.

Rich and showy, with lots of licorice snap, plum sauce, graphite, boysenberry and milk chocolate notes all carried by rich, velvety tannins. The long, fleshy finish is very accessible. Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.

Bodega Catena Zapata is located in the renowned Mendoza wine region of Argentina. Paul Hobbs helped put this winery on the map years ago, and its reputaion has done nothing but continue to rise over the last decade. The inaugural cuvee had its release with the stupendous (in Argentina) 1997 vintage. With the help of his daughter, Laura, owner Nicolas Catena is slated to likely become one of the best known names in the Argentine wine industry. Not too be missed is their Catena "Alta" line of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery's many labels include Nicolas Catena Zapata, Catena Alta, Catena, Alamos, Saint Felicien, DV Catena, Angelica Zapata, and Catena Zapata Estiba Reservada.
