($52; 15.5% alcohol, the highest of the current line-up of pinots from this winery) Good dark red. Dark berries, bacon fat and smoked meat on the nose, which is reminiscent of Northern Rhone syrah. Sweet, lush and concentrated, with deep berry and dark cherry fruit complicated by baking spices and cured meat. Fat, full pinot, finishing with soft tannins.

A top wine in this Pinot portfolio is the 2004 Pinot Noir Carrie's (about 60% destemmed fruit is used). It is an open-knit, fragrant, exuberant effort displaying a super-complex perfume of smoke, blue and red fruits, flowers, and a hint of sweet earth. A superb texture, opulence, and chewiness along with a fabulous finish of over 40 seconds result in a blockbuster yet silky-textured, seamless Pinot Noir. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

Dark, highly-extracted. A little musty right out of the bottle, but once the air begins to open it up - WOW. The nose is loaded with red cherry, cinnamon, and a funky earthiness that's nearly hypnotic. After it opens up a little, the red fruit really shines through. Some oak, but it's really quite muted. Sta. Rita Hills fruit through-and-through. Damn, I may have just drunk my last bottle.

disappointing; earthy but with harsh flavors that did not integrate.

Nice dark fruits, everything is integrated and balanced. These are great right now.

In 1996 Melville Vineyards made the bold move from Knights Valley to the Santa Rita Hills appellation, where Ron Melville and his sons set up the estate property with a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Santa Rita microclimate, with its coastal winds and fog, provided the Melvilles the perfect locale for their 139 planted acres of Pinot, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Viognier. Winemaker Greg Brewer, of Brewer-Clifton fame, oversees production at Melville.
