($48) Moderately saturated medium red. Reduced nose offers smoked meat and leather. Sweet, soft flavors of redcurrant and raspberry; still a bit reduced and one-dimensional. Finishes with sweet tannins and modest depth.

A gentle touch of wood frames notes of tar, earth, underbrush add nuance to the very pretty mix of red and dark berry fruit aromas that introduce sweet, rich, intense and nicely fresh middle weight flavors that possess good detail and particularly good delineation for a wine carrying this level of alcohol (higher alcohol wines typically lack superior cut and precision). There is also better than average finishing complexity and while there is more than a trace of warmth on the backend, this achieves better balance than the degree would suggest. Good stuff here with plenty of flavor interest and while it won't win awards for elegance, I like it anyway.

Young and taut, if a bit clipped at this stage, the flavors are built around herb, dried cherry, cola and sage notes, ending with dry, chewy tannins. Drink now through 2008. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
