2004 L'Aventure Syrah Estate
UNITED STATES / CALIFORNIA / SAN LUIS OBISPO
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92
($60) Saturated ruby to the rim. Brooding, inky aromas of cassis, blackberry, flint and smoked meat. Sweet, creamy, dense and thick; a wall of intense boysenberry and blackberry fruit covered with dark chocolate. This seamless wine reminded me of a top Australian shiraz. Not the last word in complexity but has plenty of verve for all its sweetness and density.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: September/October 2006Wine Advocate | Rating: 96
Readers looking for a clone of the 2003 Chave Hermitage or Chapoutier's 2003 Hermitage Pavillon should check out l'Aventure's 2004 Syrah Estate. Aromas of graphite, blackberries, creme de cassis liqueur, smoke, licorice, and pepper are accompanied by a wine with superb purity and massive body as well as great elegance. Drink it over the next 12-15 years. This is a brilliant wine from a Frenchman who has captured the magic of Paso Robles.Drink Dates: 2006-2021Author: Robert Parker

overripe mess, did not improve after two hoursAuthor: Seaway J
Stephan Asseo's adventure began in 1982 with a winemaking education from L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon in Bugundy and the subsequent establishment of a small empire in Bordeaux, including Chateau Fleur Cardinal. With a true desire to be more innovative than the French AOC law would allow, Asseo gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron and set out a world wide quest for great terroir.
After searching for over a year, the St. Emilion native fell in love with the unique terroir of Paso Robles and built L'Aventure Winery to pursue his ideals as a winemaker. L'Aventure's flagship Estate Cuvee (a blend of Cabernet and Syrah) has incredible track record 94-98 point scores each vintage since 2002. Robert Parker has reported that Asseo "continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fabulous portfolio of wines that makes L'Aventure one of the bright, shining reference points for the region. This is one of the California Central Coast superstars, and the wines are worth every cent."
