($25) Inky violet. Strong notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, kirsch, licorice, smoked meat and candied violet. Suave and velvety but firmed by gentle acids; the dark berry flavors show brightness and impressive sweetness and are nicely buffered by soft tannins. For a wine of this weight there's very good focus and freshness. Vanilla and oak spice come up on the finish but do not detract from the wine's bright fruit. (Vine St. Imports, Philadelphia, PA)

Smooth and generous. A gentle style of Shiraz that emerges with juicy cherry fruit and a hint of beet on the long finish.

  • More than half of all Australian wine production takes place in the South Australia region—home to the Shiraz-specializing Barossa Valley as well as revered Riesling zones Clare Valley and Eden Valley. South Australia is too large and diverse to generalize about climate or topography, with both cooler coastal areas and warmer inland sections—but rainfall is generally low throughout and drought is a constant concern.
