  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

($40; a blend of 70% syrah, 24% grenache, and 3% each alicante bouschet and petite sirah) Good full ruby color. Cherry liqueur, chocolate and spices on the rather reticent nose; showing its grenache side today. Fruity and sweet but not at all over the top. Finishes sweet and fleshy, with ripe tannins nicely buffered by the wine's material.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 88

Elegant and complex, with pretty aromas of plum, coffee, spice and tobacco. Soft black cherry and coffee flavors take on tannins and complexity on the finish. Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet. 4,000 cases made.

Monterey County now provides all the fruit for Phelps' blended Rhone Ranger cuvee, the 2004 Le Mistral (70% Syrah, 20% Grenache, and small amounts of Alicante Bouche and Petite Sirah). Juicy, savory, and ripe, with peppery black raspberry and currant aromas, sweet flavors, a hint of tar, no evidence of oak, and a long, heady finish, it will provide pleasure over the next 5-6 years.

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.
