(100% sangiovese) Medium saturated ruby. Pretty, floral aromas of red berries and spicy plum, with faint leather and bitter chocolate notes. Round and silky on the palate, but seems to be a bit low on acidity. Finishes with substantial chewy tannins and good length. This really needs time to come together.

Aromas of black cherry and flowers follow through to a medium body, with fine tannins and a delicate finish. Sangiovese.

The 2004 Cepparello has fleshed out beautifully since I last tasted it. Dark raspberries, flowers, licorice and spices blossom from the glass as the wine opens up over time. When it was young the 2004 was a much more linear wine, but since then it has put on a lot of weight. Today, the 2004 comes across as a modern day 1982 because of its balance of aromatics, fruit and structure.

Aromas of plum and red cherries; good body and smooth tannins. A little lacking in flavor.

Enjoyable. A bit rustic, and lacking some fruit for my taste.

Multiple layers of fruit, mostly sweet plum and a little cherry. Full, smooth tannins and would anticipate a long bottle life. Beautifully made wine.

The estate is run by Paolo de Marchi, who has been turning out significant and stunning wines for years. The "Cepparello" is dense and intense, but has a subtle finesse that frames lovely, dense, black fruit purity. In addition to its classic Sangiovese-based wines, Isole e Olena also produces Vin Santo, "L'Eremo" Syrah, as well as several new world varieties under the Collezione de Marchi label.
