Elegant and mature-tasting, with an enticing aroma of sandalwood and intense flavors of licorice, meat, raspberry and spice. There's a core of bright acidity to back it all up, with a long, rich finish of beef bouillon. Mourvedre, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The latest installment of Laurent Vaille's justly-celebrated if also expensive red offers a surprisingly developed, but for that reason all the more fascinating nose of red raspberry, sage, mint, sealing wax, and smoked meat. Bright raspberry fruit laced with bacon fat and tinged with candied ginger, sage, salt and cherry pit inform a texturally creamy palate. Fresh berries, soy, smoked meat, pungent-sweet citrus rind, and herbs dominate a finish of striking brightness and savory intensity in this wine that (abstracting from its textural refinement) slightly resembles a cross between Zinfandel and Cote Rotie.
For any of you that haven'tventured into the Languedoc Roussillon for Syrah based blends (but enjoy Cote Rotie, St. Joseph, Crozes Hermitage and the like), you need to start exploring France from a more southern perspective. This wine flat out rocks, kicking out awesome scents of smoked meat, violets, blackberry liqueur, boysenberry, hot stones and pepper that are to die for. While it is not an overwhelmingly powerful wine, it offers a hauntingly pure presence w/ a bright persona that belies its terroir. A confluence of seamless penetration with textbook balance that is sure to be a winner for northern Rhone geeks
