2004 Elderton Shiraz Command
AUSTRALIA / SOUTH AUSTRALIA /
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92
($82) Dark purple. Bright red and dark berry scents display impressive focus and clarity, with subtle baking spice and vanilla notes adding complexity. Very fresh-in fact almost painfully young-with nervy raspberry and cherry flavors supported by silky tannins and a jolt of acidity on the back. This opened up a bit with air, but really should be cellared for at least another five years.Author: Josh RaynoldsIssue: September/October 2007Wine Advocate | Rating: 96
Medium garnet in color, the 2004 Shiraz Command Elderton Estate is a little mute at this stage, revealing subtle to moderate aromas of leather, sandalwood and spice over warm blackberry plus some mocha. Full-bodied with medium-firm fine tannins, complex evolving flavors and a great line of acid, the finish is very long. Give it another year or 2 for the nose to emerge from this closed stage and drink it 2012 to 2022+.Author: Lisa Perrotti-BrownWine Spectator | Rating: 94
Supple, silky and appealing for its cherry pie, cherry jam and dusky spice aromas and flavors, showing enough transparency to hint at licorice and coffee around the edges. Lingers impressively on the polished, harmonious finish. A lithe, focused, ageable red.Author: Harvey Steiman

This was a very good bottle. Good round berry, well integrated tannins and a hefty earth and tar note. Not as overwhelmingly berry as many 2004s I've had. This was the clear winner amongst a flight of 2004s - amon-ra, mitolol G.A.M. Among the 2004s at ths price point I have sampled, only the Greenock Alice's Block beats this out.Drink Dates: 2012-2018Author: DartAdam
More than half of all Australian wine production takes place in the South Australia region—home to the Shiraz-specializing Barossa Valley as well as revered Riesling zones Clare Valley and Eden Valley. South Australia is too large and diverse to generalize about climate or topography, with both cooler coastal areas and warmer inland sections—but rainfall is generally low throughout and drought is a constant concern.
