This is both elegant and high-toned on the intensely floral nose with very pretty red pinot and raspberry fruit aromas trimmed in the barest touch of wood spice where the floral character continues onto the rich, intense and relatively powerful medium full flavors that culminate in a sappy, concentrated and long and tangy finish. This is lovely and crafted in an old school style. In a word, lovely.

This venerable winery, which has thirty years of history (long by California standards), has turned out a bevy of new releases. The 2004 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard boasts a deep ruby/purple color along with seductive, sweet aromas of black raspberries, black cherries, spring flowers, and spice. It possesses beautiful red and black fruits, good acidity, full body, and more tannin, but less spice than the Reed cuvee. This complex, fruit-driven Pinot Noir will benefit from 1-3 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 10-15 years.

Very ripe, with floral and cherry-rhubarb pie flavors that are pure, right down to the crust. The tannins are firm and dry, yet the fruit pushes through.

Reddish/garnet color. Red fruits on the nose. Rounded and balanced palate. Very approachable and drinking well right now.

Scarlett core, nice touch of browning at edges. Perfect age right now, or give it 5 more years for extra old flavor. Nose is raspberries, cherries, and spice. Dark red Pinot flavors. Excellent.

The hunt for limestone took California Pinot Noir trailblazer Josh Jensen to one of the highest and coldest vineyard sites in the state, to a place where limestone lived; several million tons, in fact. Time spent in Burgundy, including a harvest at DRC, had instilled in Jensen an appreciation for the influence of terroir in great wine. In 1974 Jensen bought a parcel at 2,200 feet above sea level near Mt. Harlan in San Benito County and planted his first 24 acres to Pinot. While waiting for these vines to mature, he produced his first vintage, 1,000 cases of Zinfandel, in 1975. Over the years, Jensen's property has expanded to include Viognier, Chardonnay, and additional Pinot vineyards. In the large Mt. Harlan AVA, established by his own efforts in 1990, his vines are the only ones planted. Fruit for Calera's wines comes from both the estate property and several Central Coast vineyards, which provide fruit for the Central Coast and El Ni‹¨«o bottlings. Organic practices in the vineyards, and a seven-tier gravity flow winery ensures Calera wines undergo minimal "manipulation." For his Pinot, native yeast and whole cluster fermentation in small lots, as well as 16 months in barrel make for structured, "Burgundy-inspired" wines. Truly a pioneer, Jensen has been recognized many times over for his contribution to California winemaking, recently being honored as 2007 Winemaker of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle.
