Balances savoury herbs, cedar and earthy loam with plump, ripe black fruit and cassis. Fine complexity, integrated tannins and a succulent finish. Not at all showy, it earns its mark through finesse and great balance. (LM)$105

Rich, dense and chewy, with earthy currant, herb, cedar and dried berry flavors that are intense and concentrated, offering a dash of anise and dry oak before the tannins sweep in. Decant or cellar short term. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 10,500 cases made.

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve is not the biggest, richest, most formidable example of this cuvee yet it possesses a beautifully restrained, balanced elegance that is neither pushed nor contrived. The color is a healthy dark ruby/plum and the nose offers up notes of underbrush, loamy soil and earth. The fruit veers toward red and blackberries, and the wine is close to full maturity. It is soft enough to be drunk now, but its impeccable balance will propel it over the next 10-15 years.

Georges de Latour is the classic, original |Reserve| California wine, reflecting many decades of experience with some of Napa Valley's most historic vineyards. This wine was aged for 21 months in oak. Hand-harvested fruit, whole berries, careful but vigorous extraction during fermentation and gentle handling throughout the winemaking process yield a stunning wine for the ages. The 2004 vintage of this extraordinary wine offers intense aromas of black fruits, mocha, toast and briar. It is full bodied, with rich, mouth-filling tannins and deeply concentrated black currant, vanilla and anise flavors. This vintage will require seven to nine years of aging to reach maturity, yet tastes fine now - an excellent example of the vintage.

Hits of Blackberry, coffee, oak. An excellent wine. Decanted for 30 minutes, improved as it opened up.

In 1900, when Georges de Latour's wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it "beau lieu," or "beautiful place." Shortly thereafter, de Latour sold his thriving cream of tartar business, bought the four-acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France.Today the winery continues to turn to innovative practices to craft wines in a bold, classic style. They have become a leader in clonal research, and the BV Clone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines are highly acclaimed. Most recently a new state-of-the-art winery was completed within one of the original buildings. The Georges de Latour Private Reserve Winery utilizes the latest technology in combination with time-honored traditions for the production of this exceptional, wine-the longtime benchmark of Rutherford Cabernet.
