($70) Inky violet. Exotic, multi-faceted aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, licorice, violet, black pepper and graphite. Firm and structured, with chewy texture and powerful, concentrated red and dark fruit flavors tinged by minerals and succulent herbs. For a wine of such concentration this is elegant and poised. Shows great precision and energy on the long, spicy finish.

2004 was a superb vintage in Priorat and the three entries from Alvaro Palacios are stunning. The 2004 Finca Dofi offers an upgrade. It is sourced from a single vineyard on the estate of which 60% is Grenache and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Carignan aged in 100% new French oak. Deeper in color than Les Terrasses, and more reticent aromatically, with coaxing, scents of toast and smoke, minerals, violets, blueberries, and chocolate emerge. Full-bodied and harmonious, there is an opulence to the fruit which is breathtaking. It should drink well for 10-15 or more years.

A solid red, with lovely aromas of mountain herbs, smoke and blackberry that give way to dense tannins that shadow plum, coffee and tobacco flavors. 250 cases imported.

Intense, smooth and mineral with topnotes that transcend the everyday. There's a real 'ping' factor as nuances jump out of the glass on to the palate. Very fine - much more sophisticated than early vintages of this wine. It clearly has lots of alcohol but this is very well managed and the whole seems exceedingly nutritious. Liquorice, tar, but lots of satin texture seamlessly flowing into black fruit flavours too.

Silky and smooth is the aftertaste on this Spanish grape. The berry, cherry and a hint of smoke presents well. Very pleasurable.

With Alvaro Palacios' background, it's no surprise he's leading the pack of new superstar Spanish winemakers. The industry is in his blood, as his family owns respected Palacios Remondo in Rioja. Family ties don't produce great wine, though, and Alvaro has done plenty on his own to bolster his qualifications. He studied enology in Bordeaux, then worked at Chateau Petrus under Jean-Pierre Moueix, honing his winemaking skills. Instead of taking his experiences back to his family's estate, he blazed a new path straight to Priorat's steep hills and terraces. In 1990 he bought his first vineyard, Finca Dofi, and soon after added to it what has become his most acclaimed source, L'Ermita. The vineyard, planted between 1900 and 1940, faces northeast and offers up Garnacha meriting mass critical acclaim. Alvaro's lofty vision has been to craft a wine somewhere between a Petrus and a Grange; a cursory glance at the reviews makes his accomplishment immediately clear. His three wines: Les Terraces, Finca Dofi, but most importantly L'Ermita, have launched him to absolute cult status.
