A rich, fleshy, fruit-driven style, with ripe, vivid black cherry and blackberry fruit that's well-defined, well-structured and nicely proportioned, ending with fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity. 4,100 cases made.

I was blown away by the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, which spent almost 34 months in 70% new French oak barrels. The wine is beautifully impressive, with a deep ruby/purple color and notes of loamy soil intermixed with creme de cassis, cedar, and licorice. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, but beautifully nuanced and nicely structured, with sweet, silky tannins. This wine should evolve for at least 20 or more years. The good news is that there are about 3,800 cases of this superb Cabernet. Altamura has been making wines for almost 20 years, and I certainly thought several of these wines were the best I ever had from them. They are located in Wooden Valley, which is mostly volcanic soils about nine miles northeast of Napa.

Dark purple, black currant, ripe, nose fills the glass, balanced wine without the alcohol overtones of many Napa cabs. From experience, the Altamura's age very well and it would be good to leave this alone another 5 years and try it then. Had it at a dinner party last night (alongside a 2002 Pichon Lalande) and several people commented how much they really liked it.

One of the most consistant vineyards. I enjoy every bottle.

Ripe cassis, blackberry, black cherry, hint of spice. Nicely balanced. Should continue to drink nicely.

The Altamura cabs really age well. This vintage was good and just keeps getting better

Born and raised in Napa, trained in winemaking at Sterling and Caymus, Frank Altamura has serious credentials. In 1985 he and his wife Karen began their own quest to make exceptional, collectable wine, turning an old cattle ranch in Wooden Valley into vineyards planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. The small valley, nine miles northeast of the town of Napa, provides an ideal setting for the production of intense, multi-layered wines. Warm days give way to temperatures cooler than those of Napa Valley, as fog is blown in, resulting in a longer growing season for this unique sub-appellation. Altamura's two flagship wines, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, represent hallmarks of Frank's winemaking philosophy: low yields in the vineyard and only free-run juice in the barrels. A Nebbiolo, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc are also produced.
