($109) Saturated purple. Room-filling bouquet of kirsch, dark berries, incense, floral oils and vanillin oak spices. Silky in texture, with admirably deep, focused red and dark fruit flavors complicated by sexy mocha and floral pastille qualities. Impressively elegant and fresh, finishing with outstanding persistence and a lingering cherry flavor. This boasts remarkable finesse for a wine with such palate impact.

Elegance with intensity. Delivers smoky espresso flavors from oak, with mineral and anise accents and a core of plum and black cherry. The tannins are firm and fine.

The 2004 Calvario is a worthy follow-up to the 2003, with a dense bouquet of raspberry and dark plum laced with marmalade. The palate is very well-structured with fine tannins. It is infused with notes of crisp raspberry, dark plum and blackberry, with marmalade and dried mango loitering off-stage. It is long and sensual in the mouth, but its backbone suggests it will age well. Drink 2013-2025.

Very dark crimson. I wonder how long they have had this wine? Very rich and complex on the nose, Spicy and full and rich with real depths of tobacco leaf flavour. Very well done. The oak management is superb. It is expensive, but it is an extremely fine wine.ÿ

Founded in 1995 (but making wines since 1986) by the brother and sister team of Mercedes and Miguel Angel de Gregorio, this producer hails from Briones in the Rioja Alta region. With a very "poor" terroir of stones and inhospitable soil, this estate crafts wines of great concentration and long maturation potential. Paired with the old vines sourced from 92 different parcels and a state-of-the-art winery, the Angel de Gregorios have the perfect combination of old world raw material and modern winemaking tools.

The Aurus is a cuvee of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano from the oldest vines of the parcels. The Calvario is a single vineyard production that features a majority Tempranillo with small amount of Garnacha and Graciano.
