($55) Deep ruby. Smoky red berry aromas offer striking precision and lift; floral and mineral qualities appear with air, adding a seductive character. Racy and bright in the mouth, displaying an impressive array of concentrated red fruit flavors, with gentle tannins contributing shape. Finishes with impressive cut and persistence. Very suave stuff.

Cask sample. Cool with lots of mulberries, but fresh too. Very open, rich and a real step up from previous vintages of this regular bottling. Complete and glossy. Very long and satisfying. Production 170,000 bottles.

This red has plenty of depth, with blackberry, cola, mineral and floral notes lurking under firm tannins, which frame the dense texture. Rich and intense.

The 2004 Aalto has a far different personality than the 2003. More deeply colored, it is also significantly more expressive aromatically. It reveals pain grille, pencil lead, wild blueberry, black raspberry, and blackberry liqueur notes. Opulent on the palate, it has layer upon layer of ripe fruit, and superb length but is still an infant developmentally. Give this top-flight effort 6-8 years to further evolve and drink it through 2032. -Jay Miller

Excellent, classical terroir expression of a good Ribera del Duero. A beauty, earthy, cedary, ripe fruit, leathery in where it combines finnese, power, balance in great structure. Is maturing in impressive way, should hit the stride within 12-18 months and should stay by 2-5 yrs after that

Founded in 1999 and located in Ribera del Duero, on Spain's north-central plateau, Bodegas Aalto produces critically acclaimed wines from old vine (30- to 90-years old) Tempranillo. Aged for two or more years in a combination of new and neutral French and American oak, Aalto's wines are on track to compete with the neighboring Ribera estates of Vega Sicilia and Tinto Pesquera.
