(16% alcohol) Medium ruby. Dark berries and fruity pepper on the nose. Sweet but bright, with firm acids giving the wine lovely vinosity. This shows sappier fruit than several of the foregoing zinfandels, and finishes with distinctly sweeter tannins and very good length. As high as the alcohol is, this wine does not come across as particularly sweet. From a vineyard that essen tially stretches around the top of a hill. Winemaker Ehren Jordan noted that it was picked essentially from the top down, |like a wedding cake,| over a period lasting from late September through late October, and that the vines here were better able to withstand the heat of the year. Perhaps a bit less sweet/sour than usual for this high-acid site. This has excellent depth of flavor.

From Turley's new vineyard in Paso Robles, the 2003 Pesenti Vineyard (600 cases, 16% alcohol) comes across as one of the most Rhone Valley-like wines in the portfolio. Earthy, mineral, peppery, herbaceous notes intermixed with strawberry, cherry, and licorice emerge from this wine. There is a certain austerity and angular character in the finish that kept my score from going any higher. It should drink well for 5-6 years, possibly longer.

Intense and peppery, with a hint of soy mixed in with the wild berry and cherry flavors. Turns rustic on the finish, with tealike tannins.

Delicious. Concentrated core of ripe black raspberry, kirsch and black cherry. Balanced by nice acidity which helps the wine avoid being cloying and lends a refreshing brightness. Nice long, spicy finish.

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
