($45) Reticent but superripe nose shows a slight porty quality. Sweet on entry, then very closed in the middle, with a strong peppery aspect. Today the wine's dark berry fruit is very much in the background. Finishes with chewy tannins and a continuing peppery flavor. I might have picked this blind as petite sirah.

One of the finest wines of the vintage in the Turley portfolio is the 2003 Zinfandel Dragon Vineyard. This is another Howell Mountain Vineyard that has produced 350 cases of wine (16.2% alcohol) that, aromatically, reminded me a of a superb Pomerol. Black raspberry, plum, and floral scents are accompanied by a deep ruby/purple color as well as exceptional black fruit characteristics intermixed with floral notes and a hint of minerals. This is a complex, full-bodied, opulently textured Zinfandel with purity and stature.

Quite dark with a few thick legs showing trace amounts of color. A focused and intense nose of spicy dark fruits, minerals, stone, a tiny amount of butterscotch, and pleasing |stems|. Thick and rich in the mouth with plenty of acid that keeps the wine from turning cloying and allows it to unfold all of its complexity. Moderate tannin couple well with unusually fine acidity.

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.
