($370) Bright salmon-pink with a frothy mousse. Ripe strawberry, raspberry and honeyed apple on the nose, with a suave yeastiness and a floral pungency adding complexity. Broad, fleshy and deep, offering concentrated red fruit and apple flavors kissed by dusty minerals. Surprisingly elegant for a wine from this hot vintage, with excellent finishing lift and sappy persistence. Still, while this wine has a track record for aging, I'd drink mine sooner than later.

Rich and spicy, with toast, clove, dried cherry and a touch of herbs. This is vinous and balanced on the soft side, lingering nicely on the finish. Should develop quickly.

The 2003 Rose Comtes de Champagne flows from the glass with layers of sweet, perfumed fruit. With some time in the glass, the wine fills out with superb elegance and precision. This generous, weighty Champagne is probably best enjoyed with food. As delicious as this is today, I would be tempted to age a few bottles in the cellar. Only the price is an obstacle. In 2003 the Comtes de Champagne Rose is 70% Pinot Noir from Montagne de Reims, which includes 12% still Pinot juice, and 30% Chardonnay from Cotes des Blancs, all from grand cru villages. • Taittinger, located in Reims, is the third oldest Champagne house and one of the few remaining independent, family-owned houses. It produces both fine non-vintage and vintage Champagnes. The prestige cuvee is the vintage Champagne Comtes de Champagne, named after the original Comtes de Champagne, who resided in Reims in the 13th century building subsequently purchased by Taittinger. The blanc de blancs version is produced from 6 Grand Cru sites in the Cote de Blancs. The Comtes de Champagne Rose is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, made by the addition of red wine rather than the saignee. Taittinger's style is elegant and aromatic with complex, creamy richness.
