($43) Medium dullish red. Roasted red fruits, cherry liqueur and leather on the nose. Then thick and creamy-sweet, but with a firm spine of acidity giving it a sappy quality. Ultimately finishes with a distinctly dry edge, possibly the result of the acidification.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: May/June 2005Wine Spectator | Rating: 88
Homes in on a tight core of earthy blackberry and black cherry fruit, finishing with a touch of spicy nutmeg and firm tannins. Needs a little time to soften up, but offers good concentration and depth.Author: James LaubeRating: 88
The well-made, plum/ruby-colored 2003 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard exhibits earth, spice, underbrush, cherry, and plum-like characteristics along with a slightly angular finish.Author: Robert ParkerRating: 86
Medium ruby. A high-toned nose of red pinot fruit and menthol hints introduce round, sweet and edgy flavors that offer good density but considerable acid snap on the noticeably warm finish. To be sure, there is good underlying material as the concentration is solid but the combination of heat and less than completely well-integrated acidity make this presently awkward.Issue: 3rd Quarter, 2005

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
