The closest to full maturity and farthest along in its evolution appears to be the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon RBS Beckstoffer To- Kalon Vineyard. Notes of pen ink, creosote, tar, black currants and Christmas fruitcake jump from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored effort, which is showing less color saturation than its three siblings. Full-bodied and ripe with soft tannins, good freshness and liveliness, there is no reason to defer your gratification. It is an intense, mouthfilling, terrific, young Cabernet Sauvignon that should continue to drink well for 10-15 years.

($125; 15.1% alcohol; the first vintage for this wine) Explosive aromas of currant, leather, meat, iron and mocha. Fatter and broader than the RBS, with flavors of currant, game and truffle nicely firmed by ripe acids. As sweet and lush as this is, it's also lively and firm, with a lower pH than the RBS (3.75, vs. 3.88). From Clone 6, which features loose cylindrical clusters; winemaker Brown describes it as |a powerhouse.|

Dark and intense, with concentrated currant, black cherry, mocha and espresso bean flavors that firm up, supported by tight, chewy tannins and a rich aftertaste. Closes down on the finish, with cedary lead pencil and oak flavors. 175 cases made.

After decanting an hour showed good tannic structure and well laid out fruit with a long finish.

Schrader's mission statement is essentially one where their 30-year leases on vineyard parcels give them the ability to present a specific clonal study of Cabernet Sauvignon from three highly desired clones (4, 6, and 337) grown within a single vineyard. The bottom line is that with their production averages about 1,600 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, the wines do have subtle differences, but most importantly, all of them are extraordinary in quality - among the finest Cabernets in California. Fred Schrader and his wife, Carol, hired Thomas Brown to make these wines.
