The most backward of this quartet appears to be the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Schrader Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard. With great richness, power and intensity as well as lots of blackberry, creme de cassis, coffee and chocolaty notes, an exuberant fragrance, a certain sensuality and sexiness despite its massive richness and full-bodied, broodingly backward style; this killer Cabernet needs to be forgotten for 3-4 years. It should be drunk over the following two decades.

($125; 14.9% alcohol) Good saturated medium ruby. Cassis, licorice, bitter chocolate and menthol aromas lifted by a violet topnote. Fat, dense and sweet, with black fruits complicated by cocoa powder. Very densely packed cabernet, finishing with suave, sweet tannins. A superb showing today.

Richly flavored yet elegantly styled, with layers of ripe black cherry, currant, anise, cedar and sage, firming up with chewy tannins and returning to the cherry and berry flavors. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 250 cases made.

This is a big wine that should be paired with something that can complement and stand up to it. Very smooth and drinking well. Should drink well for at least another decade.

Schrader's mission statement is essentially one where their 30-year leases on vineyard parcels give them the ability to present a specific clonal study of Cabernet Sauvignon from three highly desired clones (4, 6, and 337) grown within a single vineyard. The bottom line is that with their production averages about 1,600 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, the wines do have subtle differences, but most importantly, all of them are extraordinary in quality - among the finest Cabernets in California. Fred Schrader and his wife, Carol, hired Thomas Brown to make these wines.
