Gigondas is the flagship wine from Chateau Saint-Cosme. The soft, round 2003 Gigondas is a sexy, full-throttle effort revealing plenty of black fruits, licorice, smoke, and earth. It is ideal for drinking over the next 7-8 years.

($28; a blend of 70% grenache and 30% syrah, from 40-to-50-year-old vines) Medium ruby color. Deeply aromatic nose of spicy plum and kirsch, accented by licorice and fresh violet. The cuvaison here lasted for 50 days, and this is apparent in the wine's concentration of flavor and power.

Dark garnet with thick legs that show just a hint of color. A big, inviting nose of red fruits, milk, stone, minerals, light herbs, and white chocolate. Smooth but formidable and persistent tannins allayed with low but acceptable acidity. Concentrated fruit and excellent length. 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 5% Cinsault aged for 18 months in steel and neutral oak and bottled unfiltered. Drink now to 2010 (I have some concern re the level of tannin so drinking earlier while the fruit is in ascendance is advised).

Located in the very heart of Gigondas, this property has been in the family for 500 years, with ancient stone cellars that haven't changes much since they were hewn out of the rock. The wines are made by Louis Barroul, a fanatical and uncompromising individual who extracts from the land the true essence of the grape and is driven to make nothing but top-notch wines. Louis is a hands-on type of winemaker, and even with the grapes he contracts for, he personally oversees the thinning, pruning, ripening and harvesting. This dedication and surveillance pays off in spades in the end with wines that are focused and concentrated without being flabby. They showcase an array of balanced fruit, spice and earth flavors.
