($56) Full bright yellow. Fresh apricot, lemon, toast, crushed stone, iodine and smoke on the highly nuanced nose. Velvety and saline on the palate, but with its complexity somewhat muted today by a whiff of reduction. But this chewy wine possesses superb concentration and length. Harmonious acids frame and extend the wine's sweet fruit.

A lively, zesty style, with vibrant orange peel, apple and nectarine flavors that are firm and juicy. Finishes with a complex burst of fruit and lively, cleansing acidity.

The 2003 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard, from a vineyard planted in 1972 with the Old Wente clone on Goldridge soils, shows opulent levels of tropical fruit intermixed with beeswax and orange skin/nectarine notes. It is full-bodied, with superb purity, terrific acidity, and a long, heady finish.

Ramey Wine Cellars was founded in 1996 by husband and wife team David and Carla Ramey. David had previously made wine at such California wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd. Located in Healdsburg, Ramey Wine Cellars prides itself on producing hand-crafted wines using a combination of Old World tradition and New World innovation. Ramey crafts Cabernet blends and Chardonnays sourced from fruit in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. The Cabernets include those from Diamond Mountain District and Jericho Canyon Vineyard, as well as a Napa Valley Claret. The Chardonnays are both vineyard-designate and appellation, made in identical fashion so as to reflect their sense of place. The Chardonnays are whole-cluster pressed, fermented in Burgundian barrels with native yeast and bottled without filtration. In addition to their dedication to Cabernet and Chardonnay, Ramey has recently produced a Carneros Syrah and looks forward to purchasing vineyards of their own.
