($90-$95) Full ruby-red. Expressive aromas of redcurrant, mocha, tobacco, minerals, grilled meat and cigar box. Big, rich, lush and sweet; velvety but with excellent vinosity and snap. A wonderfully solid wine that finishes with huge but thoroughly ripe tannins and rising flavor. A major success in 2003, with the sheer density and richness to develop in bottle for two decades or more.

A brilliant effort, this 2003 displays a vigorous, intact, deep blue/purple color as well as notes of scorched earth, barbecue spices, incense, creme de cassis and cedarwood. Long, lush, medium to full-bodied, round and generous, this opulent Pauillac can be drunk now and over the next 5-8 years.

Well-shaded crimson. Shaded ripe fruit. Rather subtle and savoury and very dense. Hot finish though. (Average group score: 17.1)

Wow. This shows so much ripe fruit and berry character with just the right hint of lead pencil and spice. Full-bodied and very chewy. Big and powerful. Beautiful wine. Superb.

A very nice wine, with good berry fruit and hints of vanilla and spice. Quite well delineated, and a beautiful dark color in the glass. Still tight and quite young, with a long way to go.

Chateau Pichon Baron is a Second Growth classified Bordeaux estate located in the Pauillac appellation. In addition to producing a grand vin, Pichon Baron makes a second wine, Les Tourelles de Longueville.

The two estates Pichon Baron and Pichon Comtesse de Lalande were originally joined as one property in the 18th century, but its vineyards were divided among the Longueville heirs in 1850. In 1987 the French insurance company AXA purchased Pichon Baron and installed Jean-Michel Cazes as its director. More recently, Christian Seely took over the management role as of 2000. The property has seen much improvement over the last 20 years.

The 73 hectares of gravel vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are harvested by hand and the wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Aging is done in French oak barrels for up to 18 months. Pichon Baron has a structured style that can be attributed to the large percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend. Some of the best recent vintages include 2000, 2003 and 2005.

Located in the southwest of France, Bordeaux is the single largest fine-wine-producing region in the world, with more than 15,000 growers spread over 57 appellations and more than 700 million bottles produced annually. The region boasts a two-thousand-year winemaking history and some of the wine world's most recognized and highly sought-after names. Red Bordeaux blends comprise eighty percent of production, but dry and sweet whites are also well-known. The region is divided into the Left and Right Banks (of the Dordogne River); Cabernet Sauvignon prevails in the former and Merlot in the latter.
