($42) Bright pale yellow. Multidimensional nose combines lemon, lime, grapefruit, quinine, wet stone and oyster shell. Juicy, pure and extremely intense, with powerfully mineral flavors of white grapefruit, fresh pineapple and soft citrus fruits offering terrific cut. At once supple and tensile, with uncanny depth of flavor for California sauvignon blanc. Finishes with superb length and floral lift. A great vintage for this bottling. Morlet served this wine as a palate-clearer between his chardonnays and red wines, and it wiped my slate clean.

Tangy and ripe, with excellent depth to the mown hay, fig compote, grass and citrus-rind character. Grapefruit and nicely integrated cedar tones linger on the finish.

The 2003 Sauvignon Blanc l'Apres Midi (1,400 cases) is a fragrant Sauvignon offering copious quantities of figs, melons, mangoes, and spice in a fruit-driven, fresh, complex style.

Probably not to everyone's taste but I think this is exceptional even with unusual length of bottle age. Creamy with melon and peach fruit. Medium-bodied with rich, unctuous mouthfeel. Delicious, lengthy finish.

Peter Michael's estate vineyards (founded in 1982) are what make his wines truly exceptional. Sugarloaf Ranch sits high above Knights Valley in eastern Sonoma County, and from its rocky volcanic soil come Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Alexander Mountain Estate Vineyard, above Alexander Valley, provides additional Chardonnay. All Peter Michael wines are site-driven single vineyard bottlings, whether from the estate or the limited sourced appellations. The line-up of estate wines is supplemented by a Pinot Noir from Pisoni Vineyard called "Le Moulin Rouge."
