2003 Domaine Perrot-Minot Domaine Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru

A noticeable dollop of wood spice frames very ripe, bright, earthy and reserved aromas of plum, mocha and caf‚ that are in perfect keeping with the intense, sweet and incredibly sappy mouth coating flavors that are huge, powerful and long but not clumsy or awkward. The length and complexity here are stunning and this will age for years. A truly excellent wine that is not crafted in my particular stylistic preference because of the very high ripeness level but this is undeniably impressive.

As forward and rich as the 2003 vintage is, this is backward and monolithic, a coiled spring of black cherry, black currant, mineral, earth and oak spice flavors. A block of tannins seemingly shuts it all down, yet the core of sweet fruit peeks through on the long finish. A wine for the ages. 25 cases made.

Bright ruby. Blackberry liqueur, meat and iron on the superripe, slightly roasted nose. Hugely rich and sweet, with the extraordinary volume of the vintage. I might have mistaken this and the last two examples for St. Emilion! Finishes with superb breadth and length, and palate-staining minerality.
