  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($100-$120) Good deep red. Expressive aromas of currant, plum, tobacco, truffle and smoked meat. Flamboyantly ripe and sexy, with surprising vinosity giving shape to the fleshy flavors of raspberry, smoked meat, tobacco, truffle and minerals. Utterly captivating on the long, mellow finish, throwing off notes of sandalwood, woodsmoke, cocoa and tobacco.

  • Jancis Robinson | Rating: 16

Deep ruby with some biscuity edge to it. Flattering and although the acidity is quite dominant, it is not overwhelming. Not the purest but one of the most flattering. Chalky finish. (Average group score: 15.8)

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 93

Intense aromas of crushed berry, mineral, tobacco and smoke. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and loads of ripe, rich fruit. Goes on for minutes. This is tight and well-structured. 7,080 cases made.

This gorgeous, fully mature, complex Pape Clement exhibits notes of smoky tobacco, earth, loamy soil, forest floor, black cherries, plums and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, fresh and lively, the acids have fallen away and the tannins have melted into an opulent, fleshy, classic Bordeaux. Consume it over the next 10-15 years. Bravo!

Dark inky red, right to the rim. Intense, powerful nose with a clear aroma of toast, backed up with rich tarry blackcurrant, toffee and spicy cedar. Delicate entry then explodes on the mid palate. Massive flavours; sweet blackcurrant and smoky cedar, fine dry tannins and a lovely lingering coca-cola character on the finish.

Precise aromas of ripe tobacco and creme de casis were buttressed by sweet toast in beautiful fashion. While intensity built nicely on the palate, the structure was taut and surrounded by dry tannin. Plenty of chocolate, black currant and wood seemed to poke through, but were clearly hidden this evening. Give Pape 5-7 years before you try her again.

The chateau, located in the Pessac-Leognan appellation, owes its hallowed name to Bertrand de Goth, who succeeded Pope Benedict XI and took the name Clement V. Since 1939, the property has been owned by the Montagne family. The estate consists of 32 hectares, planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as a small percentage of white varieties. The flagship red is considered one of the best clarets in the region. The estate also makes a second wine, Le Clementin de Pape-Clement.

The Pape Clement Blanc is a skillful blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle from a mere 2.5 hectares of land. A stringent selection process and approximately 18 months in French oak make this wine an absolute dream, amazingly well-priced for the quality.
