($56) Deep ruby. Brooding, imploded nose features dark fruits with inky notes of licorice root, espresso, soy and tobacco. Seriously structured, chewy wine, packed with dense, sweet cherry and dark berry fruit and mineral tones. Finishes on a deep note of cherry liqueur, the firm, broad tannins adding to the impression of power. Very impressive.

The 2003 Numanthia was fashioned from yields of one ton of fruit per acre (from a clone of Tempranillo that often has the highest polyphenols of any Tempranillo clone). This cuvee is made from 70- to 100-year-old vines planted at a 2,300 foot elevation, which no doubt accounts for the freshness in this massively rich, intense red. A vivid, intense nose of espresso roast, pain grille, sweet black cherries, and creme de cassis is followed by a full-bodied, intensely-concentrated, rich, well-delineated, moderately structured, pure red that can be drunk young or cellared for a decade.

This rich, alluring red is packed with black fruit flavors framed by sweet, toasty oak. Despite its thick texture and full tannins, it remains lively and even graceful. Modern in style, yet the mineral and wild herb notes root it firmly in its terroir. 225 cases imported.

big one from spain - a little gamey but not enough to make it unpleasent. Not super classy - a little ruff around the edges might mellow in a few years?....

pepper and tar is what I get in this pleasant bold bottle. Numanthia is always the good way to go.

This was the wine of the day, with rich powerful, sweet and expressive Tempranillo that only these old phylloxera resistant wines can produce. Dark, rich and opaque in the glass, it continued to open up over the 4-5 hours since it was opened. Begs for red meat. Blueberry, cassis coffee, and here the oak was in full swing but in no bad way. Not sure if 2003 was remarkable for the vintage but this wine might outshine anything I know of from that region. I can still taste it in my mouth the next day.

Wonderful aromas of dark fruit and graphite on the nose. A deep dark purple in the glass. . .amazing flavors of cassis, bing cherry and dark chocolate on the palate. Fine grained tannins that could use a few more years to fully integrate. This is a robust wine and should be paired with a steak, lamb or a heavy stew. Will enjoy opening the next few over the next 5 to 7 years.
