(a blend of 75% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 8% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 3.63 pH; 68 IPT; 13.1% alcohol): Deep ruby-red. Superripe aromas of red cherries macerated in alcohol, leather, lead pencil and sweet spices. Very forward and open-knit on the palate, with earthy black fruit flavors complemented by coffee, licorice and bay leaf notes. Turns quite tannic on the moderately long finish. This does not appear to have reached full polyphenolic maturity. Though there is no denying the wine's initial fleshy appeal, I find it a little too astringent and grainy.

A healthy, youthful dark plum/ruby/purple color is followed by a bouquet of smoke, barbecued meats, black currants and new saddle leather. With full body and sweet tannin, this 2003 is strutting its stuff. Although it is not as fine as the 1989, 1990, or 2000, it is a complex, classic Pauillac to enjoy over the next decade.

A wine with silky, refined tannins and delicate fruit. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a lovely long, textured finish. This builds on the palate. More subtle than I remember. 35,000 cases made.

Purplish with a pale rim. Sweet cocoa nose. Round but a bit sweeter than the classical norm and with rather disruptive tannins. Leathery and with very marked acidity. Awkward. (Average group score: 16.5)

Inital nose is blackberry and vanilla with roses. Medium to full bodied, deep purple to the rim. This is a great wine with a smooth mouth coating and a 20 second finish. Soft and velvety and a nice acidity to pair well with protein. Decanted for one hour, from magnum.

Located just outside the town of Pauillac, Chateau Lynch Bages is famous for its Cabernet-based wines, which typify the best of the appellation. The estate is classified as one of eighteen Fifth Growths from the official 1855 classification; many experts, though, would argue that its quality merits it a place among the Second Growths. Typical Lynch-Bages reveals a wonderful bouquet, rich tannins, a long finish, and softness and complexity with age. From its founding in the 1600s, the chateau was owned by many generations of the Lynch family, and in the 1930s, was purchased by the Cazes family, who continue operations today. The finest vintages over the last fifty years include 1961, 1982, 1989, 1990, 1996 and 2000. In addition to its flagship red, Chateau Lynch Bages also produces a white wine and a second label called Haut Bages Averous.
