($45; a blend of 64% syrah, 33% cabernet sauvignon and 3% petit verdot) Deep ruby-red. Sappy aromas of black raspberry, cassis, black cherry, licorice and smoked meat. Dense, chewy and quite dry, with strong if unrefined black fruit flavors framed by firm acids. This could use more pliancy of texture. Finishes tannic and a tad pinched.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: September/October 2006Wine Spectator | Rating: 88
Firm tannins dominate the texture and give this young wine an austere edge, with only glimpses of wild berry, currant and spice. On the finish the tannins return to center stage. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.Author: James LaubeWine Advocate | Rating: 93
The 2003 Optimus Estate, a blend of 64% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Petit Verdot, exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as complex aromas of blueberries, graphite, sweet cherries, spice box, and earth. Full-bodied, rich, and Bordeaux-like, with even greater texture and opulence in addition to moderately high tannin, it will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and should last for 15. This is a brilliant wine from a Frenchman who has captured the magic of Paso Robles.Author: Robert Parker

Felt like it needs to sit for another couple of years.Author: comrade
Stephan Asseo's adventure began in 1982 with a winemaking education from L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon in Bugundy and the subsequent establishment of a small empire in Bordeaux, including Chateau Fleur Cardinal. With a true desire to be more innovative than the French AOC law would allow, Asseo gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron and set out a world wide quest for great terroir.
After searching for over a year, the St. Emilion native fell in love with the unique terroir of Paso Robles and built L'Aventure Winery to pursue his ideals as a winemaker. L'Aventure's flagship Estate Cuvee (a blend of Cabernet and Syrah) has incredible track record 94-98 point scores each vintage since 2002. Robert Parker has reported that Asseo "continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fabulous portfolio of wines that makes L'Aventure one of the bright, shining reference points for the region. This is one of the California Central Coast superstars, and the wines are worth every cent."
