  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($75; one-third each grenache, syrah and mourvedre) Black ruby. Knockout nose combines black cherry, blackberry and minerals, with a lovely spicy lift to the fruit; not at all roasted. Silky on entry, then compellingly sweet and aromatic in the mouth, with slightly high-toned kirsch and dark chocolateflavors perked up by a floral nuance. There's a lovely light touch to this rather powerful wine. Finishes firmly tannic and long, with obvious backbone but no dryness.

A Cote a Cote release blend of close to equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, the 2003 Cuvee Cote a Cote is a sexy, voluptuous effort that excels on all accounts. Still youthful, yet with hints of maturity in its ripe blackberry, creme de cassis, saddle leather, licorice and wild herbs-scented (almost garrigue-like) bouquet, this full-bodied, seamless and silky effort has blockbuster concentration, a voluptuous texture and no hard edges. Holding up beautifully over the evening, and improving in the glass, it can be consumed anytime over the coming decade.

Tight, firm and tannic, with dried plum, currant and spicy berry notes that taste compact, at points teasing with ground coffee, chicory and ending with chewy tannins. Decant. Grenache, Syrah and MourvAdre."

  • Stephan Asseo's adventure began in 1982 with a winemaking education from L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon in Bugundy and the subsequent establishment of a small empire in Bordeaux, including Chateau Fleur Cardinal. With a true desire to be more innovative than the French AOC law would allow, Asseo gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron and set out a world wide quest for great terroir.

After searching for over a year, the St. Emilion native fell in love with the unique terroir of Paso Robles and built L'Aventure Winery to pursue his ideals as a winemaker. L'Aventure's flagship Estate Cuvee (a blend of Cabernet and Syrah) has incredible track record 94-98 point scores each vintage since 2002. Robert Parker has reported that Asseo "continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fabulous portfolio of wines that makes L'Aventure one of the bright, shining reference points for the region. This is one of the California Central Coast superstars, and the wines are worth every cent."
