This is a new project between winemakers Chris Ringland and Trevor Jones, and innovative importer Dan Philips. There are 350 cases of this 100% Shiraz produced from a single vineyard planted in 1960, and aged completely in new French oak for 30 months. While the 2003 Shiraz does not have the intensity of the 2002, it is one of the most complete Shiraz cuvees I tasted in this vintage. A deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by aromas of roasted herbs, fudge, blackberries, and espresso. Opulent, full-bodied, intense, and long, it is on a faster evolutionary track than its older sibling, and consequently is best consumed over the next decade.

  • More than half of all Australian wine production takes place in the South Australia region—home to the Shiraz-specializing Barossa Valley as well as revered Riesling zones Clare Valley and Eden Valley. South Australia is too large and diverse to generalize about climate or topography, with both cooler coastal areas and warmer inland sections—but rainfall is generally low throughout and drought is a constant concern.
