CS (will be bottled feb 07) Very interesting menthol note on this energetic, superripe, very opulent wine that is JUST this side of overripe but saved by acidity and freshness. Really dramatic and rich. So rich it tastes almost drinkable now. Tannins deeply submerged beneath a richly embroidered canopy of fruit. Obviously picked before end August, before grapes started to dry/ Lots of glam oak.

Getting a few expletives in my notes, the 2003 Cote Rotie La Turque is more structured and powerful, with a youthful purple color giving way to meaty, bloody characteristics that are intermixed with creme de cassis, roasted meats, licorice and leather. Full-bodied, seamless and layered, with incredible depth, purity and texture, it needs a few more years over the La Mouline to fully stretch out, but will have three decades or more when all is said and done.

Incredibly dense and concentrated, with a polished layer of mocha-infused toast pushed by blackberry, black currant, black tea and dark olive flavors. This has tremendous power, but is also very suave, with sweet, exotic fruit notes that linger endlessly on the long, fleshy finish.

Inky purple. Vibrant, floral, remarkably deep cherry and spiced plum aromas. Lush and sweet, with an oily texture and an impressively deep kirsch quality complicated by an exotic violet pastille tone. Finishes sweet and very long, with very good lift and a lingering cherry note.

Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
