($40) Deep red. Very ripe nose offers intense red berry aromas and distinctly meaty, musky garrigue accents. Very rich and deep, with powerful, jammy raspberry and cherry flavors, dusty tannins and a long, chocolatey finish. Picks up some exotic spice notes on the back, which add vivacity to this chewy, somewhat brooding animal.

Dough and sweet earth notes lend a slightly firm feel to the roasted plum and currant fruit, which runs through the finish, but turns rigidly tannic. A bit of a gamble to see if it will soften before the fruit fades. 20,000 cases made.

The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of new saddle leather, garrigue, pepper, kirsch, and blackberries. Dense, full-bodied, and tasty, it is best drunk during its first decade of life.

Dark purple in color. Not much fruit on the nose though there is a strong mint like smell to it that stays with the wine on the palate. Strongly mineral on the palate. Not sure that I'm all that impressed with this...

Don't know what to make of this wine. So different from anything that I've tasted before. Different & interesting is what everyone that drank this commented on. Fruity but with a lot of must, hints of mint.. multiple flavors and many layers... hard to say whether I like this or not. Perhaps needs more time to evolve?

Lucky seven was a bit of a wild card. The smells of rustic Tempranillo were on the brain, especially when you take into consideration the fact that this wine was the essence of armpit! Sweaty, funky, but w/ plenty of character from its bay leaf, dried currant, sage and?.more sweaty notes! The attack of this wine was surprisingly explosive, gushing fig paste and leather that screamed of Chateauneuf?and then she fell apart a bit, becoming disjointed and ruggedly tannic, cutting the trailing garrigue notes off at the past. A masculine wine that was hardly seamless and certainly in need of sustenance to tame those tannins! Shows the heat and lack of balance that the 2003 vintage was known for, but definitely has quite a bit to admire.

Not a lot of fruit and way too much barnyard. May have been a bad bottle. Having a hard time getting excited about opening the other bottle, though.

Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
