(Raphet's parcel is just off the Route des Grands Crus on the Latricieres side of this appellation) Good full ruby-red. Deep nose shows an almost roasted ripeness, with notes of coffee and mocha dominating. Deep, broad and rather powerful, with the medicinal, briary, slightly liqueur-like black fruit flavors currently overshadowed by torrefaction. Not yet showing a lot of personality but certainly broad and fat. This rather serious premier cru also seems to be shutting down.

This estate is blessed with some of Burgundy’s oldest parcels. Produced from 100-year old vines, the 2003 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes Cuvee Unique displays aromas of spicy dark fruits. A fleshy, structured, medium-bodied wine, it is packed with red cherries and currants. Loaded with ripe tannin, it will require some patience. Drink it between 2008 and 2014.
