The 2003 QUINTA DA GAIVOSA was rather disjointed on my first taste, showing sharp and heady, and I had some questions about its balance. This comes around much faster in a decanter now, knitting together rather well and showing that it can generally handle its alcohol, although it still needs air, and has plenty of power on first impression. On the other hand, I increasingly doubt that this will ever be truly distinguished. If it is often tasty and more of a complete wine now, I am also beginning to lean toward the theory that the Reserva Pessoal in this vintage is a much more charming and better balanced wine.
