There are 2,500 cases of this 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon fashioned by winemaker Tony Soter from several sub-appellations (most notably Rutherford, St. Helena, Oakville and Calistoga). A blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc aged in French oak, this beauty reveals aromas of sweet graphite, black currants, coffee and vanillin. Full-bodied with loads of pure red and black fruits, Rutherford dust and loamy soil character, lots of glycerin and a medium to full-bodied finish, it can be enjoyed now or cellared for another decade.

($90) Bright ruby-red. Aromas of currant, blackberry, tobacco and mocha turned spicier with aeration. Sweet and sappy on the palate, with noteworthy energy to its flavors of red berries, spices, minerals, tobacco and earth. Serious, ripe wine, finishing with firm tannic spine and very good aromatic persistence. This has turned out well.

Supple and balanced, with a trim band of spicy currant, cedar, anise and sage. Lacks the richness and density of my favorites from this producer, yet achieves balance nonetheless. 2,500 cases made.

Etude was established in 1982 by wine consultant Tony Soter to produce high quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir sourced from top growers. The brand embarked on an estate-focused philosophy in 1999 with the purchase of a former pasture at the base of Sonoma Mountain. The sustainably-produced wines include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and five estate-grown Pinot Noirs. Additionally, their appellation-focused Cabernet Sauvignon program offers selections from St. Helena, Oakville and Rutherford, as well as a Napa Valley bottling. Winemaker is Jon Priest.
