($30) Dark red. Very reticent nose reluctantly gives up some smoky oak notes with air but not much fruit. Dense and backward in the mouth, with meager cherry flavor and slightly raspy, green oak notes. Hints at cherry and licorice on the finish, but this is a very young and closed wine.

Very ripe plum, mocha and even a hint of stewed fruit leads to big, rich and full flavors that interestingly are somewhat fresher than the nose with a warm, sweet and mouth coating finish of solid persistence. This is particular in style and while not out of balance, it is notably warm and I would absolutely be inclined to drink this with food. Approachable now though there is the underlying structure to suggest a few years in the cellar would smooth out the tannins.

  • Elk Cove owners Joe and Pat Campbell began producing Pinot Noir in 1977 and have kept the business in the family as their son Adam is now full-time winemaker. Fruit sources include 180 acres of estate vineyards on four sites in the Northern Willamette Valley. From these low-yielding, steep-sloped vineyards, the winery produces an array of wines including Pinot Gris and Blanc, Riesling, Syrah, a sparkling wine, and of course Pinot Noir. The recent addition of Five Mountain Vineyard continues the long held philosophy of using mature, established vineyard sites.
