  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 94

This is extremely concentrated and at the same time shows a wonderful balance of acidity and botrytis character. Full-bodied, yet sweet and rich. Very good length. I like the 2001 better, but this is clearly outstanding.

This is pure Semillon. The 2003 is 12.7% alcohol, 227gms/L sugar and 4.5 gms/L residual acidity. The 2003 has a bright, golden hue. The nose is extremely |liquoreux| with touches of quince, stewed apricot, caramel and marzipan, perhaps a little over the top than |extravagant|. The palate is very rich and mellifluous but for me it lacks the requisite tension and poise on the spicy, toffee, Manuka honeyed-tinged finish. I would actually drink this now.

  • Chateau Doisy-Daene, a Second Cru Classe in 1855, is located in Barsac in the Sauternes appellation. Doisy-Daene has been in the Dubourdieu family since 1924, and for more than eighty years, three generations of family vine growers have exercised their talents to produce the estate's great sweet white wines.

The composition of the soil where Doisy-Daene is grown is a thin layer of clayey sand, known as "Barsac red sand," which sits on top of a chalky subsoil. This soil type is particularly well-suited to the making of elegant and distinguished white wines.

The wine produced is defined by the essence of "noble rot": strength, balance, and subtlety. Doisy-Daene's goal is to produce a style of wine which is a great expression of the calcareous soil on which it is grown and a truly aesthetic family tradition.
