  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 84

Ripe, dense, offering more dried fruit than fresh, with cherry and earth lingering on the slightly bitter finish.

The 2003 Shiraz l'Explorateur (5,000 cases produced) exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with a big, rich bouquet of melted licorice, blackberry liqueur, pepper, and a hint of road tar. Ripe, full-bodied, supple-textured, and long, it should drink well for 5-10 years. Kudos to proprietor Jonathan Malthus for his work in the Barossa.

  • More than half of all Australian wine production takes place in the South Australia region—home to the Shiraz-specializing Barossa Valley as well as revered Riesling zones Clare Valley and Eden Valley. South Australia is too large and diverse to generalize about climate or topography, with both cooler coastal areas and warmer inland sections—but rainfall is generally low throughout and drought is a constant concern.
