($70) Deep, bright red. Liqueur-like aromas of cassis, black cherry and licorice, with a subtle hint of white pepper. Extremely sweet, almost candied flavors of raspberry and strawberry, with licorice pastille and violet notes coming up with air. The chewy finish features rich, mocha-laced red berry flavors and well-knit tannins.

Kirsch liqueur in addition to ground pepper and white chocolate aromas jump from the glass of the dark ruby/purple-tinged 2003 Grenache Old Vines Hickinbotham Vineyard. Fruity, heady, and rich, with a stunningly textured mouthfeel, this is knock-out stuff.

Ripe and luscious, beautifully balanced to keep it on its toes, dancing delicately through a long finish, offering plum, cherry and red peppercorn flavors that don't quit. 800 cases made.

Not what I expected. Disappointing. This wine has an aging potential, but I would definitively drink it ASAP. Medium body, slightly light on the nose. Slightly bubbly on taste which is weird.

Owner Roman Bratasiuk shows a devotion to the simple tenets that yield some of the best Shiraz fruit grown in Australia. From the flagship Astralis vineyard, he hand-harvests fruit from over 75-year-old dry-farmed vines and allows the indigenous yeasts to work their magic. The resultant wine is unctuous and viscous, yet harmonized, and expresses those elements which define the essence of great Shiraz - black fruit, bramble, super concentrated cassis and spice, undercurrents of tobacco, coffee and licorice root.

Clarendon Hills also produces wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Semillon.
