This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is from the beautiful Bryant Family Vineyard overlooking Lake Hennessey. Made following a period of turmoil (changing winemakers, lawsuits, etc.) at this estate, the dense purple-colored 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses a classic nose of spring flowers, blueberry liqueur and creme de cassis, 15.2% natural alcohol, and a complex, sweet, rich, full-bodied mouthfeel. There are many great vineyard sites in this area, and Bryant is exploiting theirs to the maximum. Drinkable now, this beauty should keep for 10-15 more years.

($235) Ruby-red. Crushed cassis and caramel on the nose. Dense and sweet on the palate, with a deep core of cassis fruit. Powerful, ripe, long wine, finishing with sweet tannins and a youthful, juicy quality. This needs a few years of patience. Just 400 cases were produced from a very small harvest. The 2001 vintage was the first harvest here to include the recently replanted portion of this vineyard.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 88

Elegant, intense and flavorful, with a mix of red currant, black cherry, wild berry, herb, tobacco and sage. Finishes with lively acidity and good structure, as the tannins fold in nicely, adding a hint of toasty oak on the finish. 400 cases made.

Dense and chewy with long finish. More sweet fruit would bring closer to perfection.

Dense purple black color. The nose has it all from blackberry, blueberry, chocolate, licorice, spices and espresso with an oaky character. Heavy, opulent, full bodied on the palate all these can be found with a magnificient finish.

Located high above Lake Hennessy, the vineyards which supply this outstanding expression of Napa's bounty are some of the few influenced by the moderating influence of a relatively large body of water. At 1,500-feet, the high altitude of the Pritchard Hill area also serves to produce low yields of premium grapes that provide the dense, concentrated, black fruit aspect of this enormously complex 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 1987 by Don Bryant, the wines were originally made by Helen Turley. The current winemaker is Marc Gagnon with Michel Rolland consulting.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
