($90) Bright ruby-red. Musky redcurrant, tobacco, underbrush and earth on the nose, plus hints of fresh herbs and licorice. In a juicy, tangy style but with slightly green acidity giving the redcurrant and mint flavors a somewhat pinched character. There's good intensity here but the wine finishes with slightly drying tannins.

I'll keep my notes brief, but my favorites in 2003 include the Marston Vineyard on Spring Mountain as well as the Quarry, Rancho del Oso, and Steinhauer vineyards.
